Islands in a Dry Sea
In the semi-arid Caatinga biome of northeastern Brazil, the area is dotted with granite boulder outcrops called "lajedos". These rocky areas are habitat islands within the scrubby, dry forest. On these islands lives the Mocó rock cavy (Kerodon rupestris), a rodent endemic to this unique Brazilian environment. Weighing around 1 kilogram and measuring 200 to 400 mm long, the Mocó looks similar to a guinea pig but with a longer face and short ears. Its tail is entirely absent or vestigial.
The Caatinga is an unpredictable environment, with annual rainfall varying between 400 and 1000 mm, and the biome experiences frequent periods of drought. While many animals are driven out during dry spells, the Mocó is a habitat specialist, perfectly adapted to its rock-pile home. These outcrops are shelter from predators in their numerous cracks and hollows. The cavies are expert climbers, a skill that allows them to forage on tree branches for leaves, buds, and bark. They are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. Social animals, they live in groups centered around these rock shelters, typically with one dominant male and several females.
A Genetic Archipelago
The rock cavy's dependence on the lajedos creates a fascinating scenario for evolution. The populations on each outcrop are effectively marooned, with individuals rarely traveling across the open, more exposed Caatinga landscape to breed with cavies from other outcrops. This isolation has led to significant genetic differentiation between populations. Each "island" is a separate evolutionary experiment, with its own distinct gene pool adapting to local conditions. This structure makes the Mocó a model organism for studying metapopulation dynamics and conservation genetics.
This unique evolutionary position also makes the species vulnerable. Climate change projections for the Caatinga predict rising temperatures and increased aridity. For the Mocó, this is a direct threat. The granite boulders where they live can absorb immense heat, turning their island refuges into hotplates. Unable to escape to cooler ground, entire genetically distinct populations risk being cooked on their stone islands. While the species is listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN, local populations have declined by 30% in the last ten years due to hunting and habitat destruction. Some assessments in Brazil already list the species as Vulnerable. Protecting the connectivity of the Caatinga landscape is a priority to ensure these unique populations can persist.
