A challenge to prehistory
In the semi-arid landscape of northeastern Brazil, Serra da Capivara National Park holds the largest concentration of prehistoric sites in the Americas. This UNESCO World Heritage site, covering 129,140 hectares, contains more than 1,300 archaeological locations, with hundreds of rock shelters decorated with ancient paintings. The focus of scientific interest is the rock shelter known as Boqueirão da Pedra Furada. Excavations led by Brazilian archaeologist Niède Guidon, beginning in the 1970s, uncovered charcoal from what she identified as ancient hearths and simple quartzite pebble tools.
The controversy stems from the age of these findings. Using radiocarbon dating on the charcoal, Guidon's team reported dates stretching back 32,000, 48,000, and even up to 60,000 years before the present. These dates radically contradict the long-standing "Clovis First" model, which posits that humans first arrived in the Americas from Asia around 13,000 years ago. If the Pedra Furada dates are correct, it means humans were present in South America tens of thousands of years earlier than previously accepted, forcing a complete reevaluation of American settlement. Guidon has even proposed that these early inhabitants may have arrived by boat from Africa.
Geofacts or artifacts?
The debate over Serra da Capivara hinges on a fundamental question: are the stone objects and charcoal evidence of human activity, or are they products of natural processes? Skeptics argue that the simple "pebble tools" are not definitively human-made. They could be "geofacts"—rocks that have broken and flaked naturally after falling from the high cliffs above the shelters. The charcoal, critics suggest, might not be from controlled human fires but rather the remnants of natural wildfires that swept through the area. The region's capuchin monkeys are also known to smash rocks, which could further complicate the interpretation of simple stone tools.
Despite the controversy over the oldest layers, the park contains undisputed evidence of later human occupation. The most visible evidence is the extensive rock art, with some paintings dated to at least 12,000 years ago. These paintings, belonging to the Nordeste and Agreste traditions, are rendered in shades of red ochre and depict complex scenes of hunting, rituals, dancing, and daily life. The images show animals native to the Caatinga biome, including deer, armadillos, jaguars, and the capybaras that give the park its name. Over 30,000 individual figures have been cataloged, providing a record of the area's Holocene inhabitants.
