An ancient paintbox
On the granite slopes of Lukenya Hill, a rocky outcrop rising from the Athi-Kapiti plains, archaeologists have found a long and continuous record of ancient human life. The rock shelters on this hill contain stratified deposits that span the transition from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) to the Later Stone Age (LSA), beginning as early as 50,000 years ago. Among the thousands of stone tools and animal fossils, numerous pieces of ochre provide direct evidence of pigment processing by early Homo sapiens.
The ochre consists of iron-rich rocks and earth, which early humans ground to produce powders. The colors, primarily reds and yellows, come from the minerals hematite (iron oxide) and goethite (iron hydroxide). At Lukenya Hill, dozens of ochre pieces show clear signs of human use. Many have flattened facets with parallel striations, evidence of being rubbed against a coarse grindstone to create a fine powder. This pigment production is not an isolated event; it represents a persistent technological and cultural practice maintained at this specific location for thousands of years. The ochre appears alongside sophisticated stone tool technologies, including small, finely made microliths characteristic of the LSA, which may have been used as spear points or arrowheads.
The purpose of pigment
The consistent production of ochre powder at Lukenya Hill suggests it was a material with a defined purpose. While its exact applications are debated, several functional and symbolic uses are possible. One common hypothesis is its use in hafting—creating adhesives to attach stone points to wooden shafts. Mixed with plant resin, ochre can act as a binding agent. Evidence from other MSA sites in Africa supports this interpretation.
Another possibility is the use of ochre for preserving animal hides. The iron oxides in the powder have properties that can aid in the tanning process. A more frequently cited use is for symbolic expression, such as body painting for rituals or social signaling. The selection of specific colors, particularly saturated reds, at other Stone Age sites is often interpreted as evidence for symbolic behavior. At Lukenya Hill, the long-term, repeated processing of these pigments points to a stable tradition passed down through generations. The human remains found at one of the hill's sites, GvJm-22, include a partial Homo sapiens cranium dated to approximately 23,000 years ago, placing these early modern humans directly in the context of this ancient pigment workshop.
