The Last Royal Lions
The Asiatic lion, Panthera leo leo, once commanded a vast territory stretching from Greece across Southwest Asia to eastern India. By the late 19th century, trophy hunting by British officers and Indian royalty, combined with habitat loss, had decimated their numbers. The subspecies was nearly extinct. By the turn of the 20th century, the last surviving population—estimated at fewer than 20 individuals—found its final refuge in the private hunting grounds of the Nawab of Junagadh in Gujarat.
In a remarkable act of foresight, Nawab Mahabat Khan II banned lion hunting in his territory around 1879, a policy his successors continued. This protection, extended within what would eventually become the Gir Forest National Park, saved the Asiatic lion from annihilation. The conservation effort was one of the earliest of its kind in India. While tens of thousands of tigers and leopards were being hunted across the subcontinent, the rulers of Junagadh chose to protect their lions, referring to them as "royal guests". The sanctuary was formally established in 1965, and from that handful of survivors, the entire wild population of Asiatic lions has grown.
An Army of Clones
The survival of the Asiatic lion is a conservation success, but it came at a steep genetic price. The severe reduction in population size created an extreme "genetic bottleneck." The current population of 891 lions (as of the 2025 census) is essentially an extended family, sharing a tiny fraction of the genetic variation once present in the subspecies. This lack of diversity is far more pronounced than in most African lion populations.
This genetic uniformity presents a grave and persistent threat. With little variation in their immune system genes, the lions are exceptionally vulnerable to epidemics. A single pathogen, such as the canine distemper virus that killed over 1,000 African lions in the Serengeti in 1994, could potentially wipe out the entire Gir population. The low genetic diversity also manifests in physical ways. Scientists have observed indicators of inbreeding, such as a high percentage of abnormal sperm and instances of cubs born with malformed limbs. The entire subspecies is in a precarious position, its survival depends on the health of this single, isolated population. To mitigate this risk, conservationists have long advocated for the establishment of a second, separate population. Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh was identified as a suitable site, and India's Supreme Court ordered the translocation in 2013, but the process has faced significant political delays.
