An accidental discovery
In December 2000, scientists from India's National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) were conducting a routine pollution survey in the Gulf of Khambhat. Twenty kilometers off the coast, west of Hazira, their side-scan sonar equipment started mapping unusual geometric patterns on the seabed. The anomalies were found at water depths between 20 and 40 meters. Intrigued, the team returned for more detailed surveys. They discovered what appeared to be the remains of two ancient river channels, flanked by features resembling square and rectangular foundations. The entire site of these acoustic anomalies stretched over a vast area, roughly nine kilometers long.
Follow-up investigations from October 2002 to January 2003 used dredging equipment to bring samples to the surface. The recovered items included pottery shards, weathered stones described as tools, hearth materials, fossilized animal bones, and even a human tooth. One of the most significant finds was a piece of carbonized wood. This sample was sent to multiple laboratories for radiocarbon dating. The National Geophysical Research Institute in Hyderabad reported a date of 7190 BCE, while the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany gave a range of 7545-7490 BCE. Averaged out, this suggested an age of around 9,500 years Before Present. If these dates are connected to the structures, it would make the site thousands of years older than the earliest cities of Mesopotamia or the Harappan Civilization of the Indus Valley.
A scientific controversy
The announcement of a potential 9,500-year-old city created a deep divide in the scientific community. The primary point of contention is the methodology of the discovery. Archaeologists stress that the artifacts were recovered by dredging, not through a controlled excavation. This method destroys the stratigraphic context, meaning an ancient piece of wood could have been deposited by a river next to a much younger pottery sherd. The Gulf of Khambhat is known for having some of the world's most powerful tidal currents, which can exceed speeds of 3 meters per second. Critics argue these currents could easily mix materials from different time periods, making it impossible to definitively link the 9,500-year-old wood to the sonar anomalies or other dredged artifacts.
Skeptics also suggest the geometric patterns seen on sonar could be natural geological formations. The sonar images are open to interpretation, and without direct visual confirmation by marine archaeologists on site, many remain unconvinced that they represent man-made structures. Proponents argue that the area was dry land during the early Holocene when sea levels were significantly lower. The geological setting, along a former river valley, is a logical place for human settlement. However, until artifacts can be excavated in situ from a confirmed cultural layer, the Gulf of Khambhat site remains an unverified mystery.
