A landscape in motion
The Gediz River Graben is a 150-kilometer-long, east-west trending rift valley in western Turkey. This massive geological feature is the direct result of north-south continental extension, a process that is actively pulling the region apart. The primary driver for this extension is the interaction between tectonic plates: the African Plate subducts, or dives beneath, the Anatolian Plate along the Aegean-Cyprian subduction zone. This motion forces the Anatolian Plate westward, creating tensional stress that stretches and thins the Earth's crust.
The graben's formation is not a single event but an ongoing, two-stage process that began approximately 5 million years ago, during the Pliocene epoch. The valley itself is an asymmetric graben, defined by large normal faults that are more prominent and active along its southern margin. These high-angle faults have caused the valley floor to drop more than 2 kilometers relative to the mountains on either side, which are known as horsts. One horst is the Bozdağ Range, which rises to an elevation of about 2 kilometers. This vertical displacement continues today, with time-averaged fault motion rates calculated between 0.4 and 1.3 millimeters per year.
A library of sediment
The deep depression created by the faulting does not remain empty. It has been filled with a thick sequence of sediments eroded from the surrounding highlands. Gravity surveys and drilling data reveal that the sedimentary fill in the Gediz Graben reaches a maximum thickness of more than 2 kilometers in some areas. This accumulation of material records the region's environmental and tectonic history.
The sediment consists mainly of continental deposits from rivers and lakes (fluvial and lacustrine). The layers document a landscape of ancient river systems and lakes that existed as the valley floor progressively subsided. The entire process is part of a "wide-rift mode" of crustal stretching that has characterized the region during the Pliocene and Quaternary periods.
This active tectonic setting makes western Turkey one of the world's most seismically active regions. The ongoing movement along the graben's bounding faults is the source of frequent earthquakes. The magnitude 6.9 Alaşehir earthquake in 1969, which occurred on one of the graben's faults. The thinning crust also allows heat from the Earth's mantle to rise closer to the surface, resulting in numerous geothermal fields and hot springs throughout the Gediz Graben. Reservoir temperatures as high as 287°C have been measured in geothermal wells.
