A phantom of the mountains
The Anatolian leopard, Panthera pardus tulliana, was the apex predator of the rugged forests and hills of western Turkey. For millennia, it was important to the region's ecology and culture. This large cat, with males weighing up to 90 kilograms (198 lbs), was once widespread, roaming from the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts into Eastern Anatolia. Its diet consisted mainly of wild ungulates like deer, chamois, and mountain goats.
The 20th century saw a sharp decline in its population. The primary drivers were trophy hunting and retaliatory killings for livestock predation. Habitat loss from deforestation, the conversion of land to orchards, and the construction of new roads also fragmented their territory, isolating populations and accelerating their disappearance. The decline was rapid; between the late 1940s and the mid-1970s, the species was pushed to the brink. The last officially confirmed Anatolian leopard was killed on January 17, 1974, in Bağözü village, near Beypazarı, after it reportedly attacked a woman. After this event, the leopard was widely considered extinct in the wild in Anatolia.
The ghost in the genes
The story of the Anatolian leopard's extinction took a scientific turn with the advent of genetic analysis. For decades, it was classified as a distinct subspecies, Panthera pardus tulliana. Modern taxonomic studies, however, used museum specimens to analyze the leopard's DNA. These analyses revealed that the Anatolian leopard was genetically indistinct from the Persian leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor, now also classified under P. p. tulliana), which still survives in Iran, the Caucasus, and parts of Central Asia.
This reclassification changes the story from the complete extinction of a unique subspecies to a local extinction—or extirpation—of a regional population. The Anatolian population represented the westernmost edge of a much larger range for the Persian leopard. This finding shows a concept in conservation biology: isolated, peripheral populations are often the first to vanish when pressures like hunting and habitat loss intensify. The "extinction" in Anatolia was the disappearance of a local group within a wider-ranging, endangered subspecies.
Remarkably, the story isn't quite over. Since 2019, systematic camera trap surveys by Turkish authorities have captured definitive photographic and video evidence of leopards in the mountainous regions of the country. DNA was even collected from a urine sample and registered with the World Gene Bank, confirming the animal's identity. These individuals are believed to be remnants of the historic population, suggesting that the ghost of the Anatolian mountains may yet endure.
