A Prehistoric Survivor
The Caucasian Salamander, Mertensiella caucasica, is a biological relic. Fossils related to this species have been found in the Pliocene deposits of Poland, suggesting a much wider distribution before the massive glaciations of the Pleistocene epoch, or Ice Age. As ice sheets advanced across Europe, these salamanders found sanctuary in the Caucasus region, a mountainous area that was an important "Colchis refugium". This pocket of stable, temperate climate allowed countless species, including the salamander, to persist while populations elsewhere vanished.
Today, Mertensiella caucasica lives only in a narrow range within the western Lesser Caucasus mountains. Its closest living relative is not a neighboring species, but the gold-striped salamander (Chioglossa lusitanica) from the Iberian Peninsula. Molecular data indicates their common ancestor lived around 15 million years ago, evidence of the salamander's ancient lineage. The species is considered a Lazarus taxon—one that disappears from the fossil record only to be rediscovered in the present day. Its survival in these isolated mountain valleys is a direct link to a pre-Ice Age world.
Life Without Lungs
The most remarkable adaptation of the Caucasian Salamander is its complete lack of lungs. Nearly two-thirds of all salamander species are lungless. Instead of breathing air, Mertensiella caucasica relies on cutaneous respiration. Its thin, permeable skin allows oxygen to diffuse directly from the cold, oxygen-rich water of mountain streams into its bloodstream. This evolutionary strategy makes it entirely dependent on its specific aquatic habitat.
This salamander is a habitat specialist, found along the shaded banks of fast-flowing brooks and small rivers, typically no more than 1.5 meters wide. It occupies elevations from sea level up to 2,400 meters in beech, coniferous and mixed forests. The water temperature in these streams stays cool, often around 12°C in the summer. The adult salamanders are nocturnal and secretive, spending their days hiding under stones, logs, and root systems, often within a few hundred meters of the water. Their diet consists of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates like insects and amphipods. Due to its specialized needs and fragmented distribution, the IUCN has classified the species as Vulnerable, with habitat loss from logging being a primary threat.
The life cycle is slow and tied to the cold streams. A female deposits only 10 to 25 large eggs in hidden, moist locations near the water. The larvae hatch after one to two months and are fully aquatic, possessing gills. They may spend one to three years as larvae before undergoing metamorphosis, a much longer development period than many other amphibians.
