A timeline in the floor
The Belum Caves are the second-largest cave system in the Indian subcontinent, a 3,229-meter-long network of passages and chambers formed by the Chitravathi River eroding limestone deposits over millions of years. The geological formations are impressive, the most scientifically significant features are on the cave floor. Sediments here contain a layered record of human activity. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has excavated remnants of pottery vessels and dated them to 4500 BC. This confirms a long period of human presence, stretching from the prehistoric era into historical times.
The first official record of the caves was by British geologist Robert Bruce Foote in 1884, but they remained largely unstudied until a German speleological team led by Herbert Daniel Gebauer conducted a detailed exploration between 1982 and 1983. Excavations have revealed a complex stratigraphy. The layered sediments, deposited by the ancient river that once flowed through the cave, have preserved artifacts from different eras in chronological order. Deeper layers contain older objects, while those closer to the surface are more recent. This sequence allows archaeologists to track cultural and technological changes over millennia. Later occupations by Jain and Buddhist monks are also evident from relics found within the caves.
Artifacts from the strata
The objects recovered from the Belum Caves' sedimentary layers show its past inhabitants. The oldest artifacts are handmade pottery vessels, indicating a pre-Buddhist settlement dating back thousands of years. The specific types of pottery and tools change from one layer to the next, showing a clear progression of techniques and lifestyles.
Archaeologists have found tools made from bone and stone. These include implements that were likely used for hunting and daily life. The presence of mortars and pestles suggests the processing of plants, possibly for food or medicine. The discovery of Buddhist relics in the upper strata, such as those from a "Meditation Hall" near the entrance, shows a later phase of the caves' use as a religious site. These later artifacts are now housed in a museum in Anantapur. The full collection of objects demonstrates a transition from a prehistoric, possibly semi-nomadic lifestyle to a more settled existence and later, a place for spiritual retreat. A new species of cave-dwelling organism, Andhracoides gebaueri, was also discovered within the cave system.
