A living genetic archive
In the Attappadi highlands of Kerala, a rain shadow region in the Western Ghats, a quiet revolution in agricultural science is taking place. Here, the indigenous Irula, Muduga, and Kurumba communities are the custodians of a significant genetic repository. For generations, they have maintained a farming system that differs from modern monocultures. This system, known as Panja Krishi, involves the mixed cultivation of multiple crops in the same field, a practice that increases soil fertility and resilience.
Central to this effort is the conservation of landraces—traditional crop varieties adapted to local environmental conditions. While India once cultivated approximately 110,000 rice varieties, today that number has fallen to around 6,000. In Attappadi, however, the communities actively preserve around 200 varieties of rice, in addition to at least 10 types of millets, 20 varieties of leafy greens, and numerous tubers, pulses, and vegetables. These are not museum pieces; they are actively cultivated crops, forming the basis of local food security. The collection includes varieties of finger millet (Eleusine coracana), little millet (Panicum sumatrense), and sorghum, each with unique nutritional profiles and high climate resilience.
The significance of this living seed bank extends beyond local subsistence. These landraces contain a vast pool of genetic diversity. This diversity is a resource for future agriculture, offering traits like drought tolerance, pest resistance, and nutritional benefits that have been bred out of many commercial crops. The conservation efforts in Attappadi safeguard this irreplaceable genetic heritage from the threat of agricultural homogenization.
The science of traditional storage
The long-term viability of these seeds depends on ingenious, time-tested storage methods that predate modern refrigeration. The communities utilize traditional granaries and containers, sometimes called kabla, made from bamboo, wood, and clay. These structures are often plastered with a mixture of cow dung and clay, which acts as a natural barrier against moisture and insects.
The scientific principles behind these methods are effective. Before storage, seeds are thoroughly sun-dried to reduce their moisture content to between 10-12%, an important step that inhibits fungal growth and premature germination. Inside the containers, seeds are often mixed with wood or cow dung ash. The ash fills the empty spaces, reducing the amount of oxygen available for pests to survive. It also keeps the seeds dry. Some practices involve mixing seeds with the leaves of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), which contain natural insect-repellent compounds.
This system of seed preservation is decentralized and community-managed, with knowledge passed down orally through generations. It functions without external energy inputs and uses locally available materials, offering a sustainable model for preserving agrobiodiversity. This approach ensures that the genetic keys to future food security remain in the hands of the communities who have cultivated them for centuries.
