The Spectrum of a Single Species
In the dense, wet rainforests of India's Western Ghats, a single venomous snake species presents an extraordinary puzzle. The Malabar pit viper, Craspedocephalus malabaricus, is not one color, but a spectrum. Individuals can be brilliant yellow, leaf green, cryptic brown, orange, or even maroon and purple, often with black or brown zigzag patterns. These are not different subspecies; they are color morphs of the same species, living and breeding in the same habitat, often right next to each other.
This snake is endemic to the Western Ghats, found at elevations between 600 and 2,000 meters. An adult can reach up to 105 centimeters in length, with a characteristically triangular head that is wider than its neck. Like other pit vipers, it possesses heat-sensing loreal pits between its eyes and nostrils, which allow it to detect warm-blooded prey in the dark. It is a nocturnal ambush predator, most active during the monsoon months, preying on frogs, lizards, small mammals, and birds.
An Evolutionary Enigma
The reason for this dramatic color polymorphism remains one of the region's most debated biological questions. Genetic studies confirm these differently colored snakes are all one species, but the specific genetic mechanism controlling the color variation has not been identified. Several hypotheses attempt to explain the evolutionary advantage, but none are conclusive.
One leading theory is crypsis, or camouflage. Different colors may provide better concealment in different microhabitats—a green morph among sun-dappled leaves, a brown one in the leaf litter. Some observations suggest juveniles are mostly pale brown and may change color as they mature and settle into a specific microhabitat. Studies have not yet found a consistent correlation between a snake's color and its preferred location. Other theories propose that the variety of colors might confuse predators, making it difficult for them to form a consistent search image. It's also possible that the colors play a role in thermoregulation or even sexual selection, but much more research is needed to understand this phenomenon.
The snake's venom is primarily hemotoxic, causing significant pain and swelling, but bites are rarely fatal to humans. Recent studies, however, indicate that the venom can cause more severe complications than previously thought, including issues with blood clotting and kidney function, leading to calls for better clinical management of bites.
