An Object in the Ice
On the northwest corner of the Western Plateau of Mount Ararat, at an altitude of approximately 4,663 meters (15,300 feet), lies a feature known as the Ararat Anomaly. First photographed by a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance mission in 1949, this elongated, dark object is embedded in the mountain's shrinking ice cap. The original images were classified for decades due to the mountain's position on the sensitive Turkish-Soviet border. They were released in 1995 through the efforts of Porcher Taylor, a national security analyst who has investigated the anomaly for years using satellite intelligence methods.
The anomaly's dimensions are a primary area of interest. Its length-to-width ratio is approximately 6:1, a proportion that proponents of an artificial origin find significant. Its overall length has been estimated at up to 309 meters (1,015 feet) in some analyses. It rests on the edge of a steep, unstable slope, subject to avalanches. The location is remote and difficult to access, making on-the-ground investigation nearly impossible. Interest in the object is largely driven by its perceived resemblance to the biblical description of Noah's Ark, which Genesis states came to rest in the "mountains of Ararat."
Imaging a Mystery
Decades of remote sensing have produced a portfolio of intriguing but inconclusive data. Following the 1949 aerial photos, the site was imaged by a series of U.S. intelligence assets, including the KH-9 and KH-11 spy satellites in the 1970s and 1990s. Later, commercial satellites like SPOT, Landsat, IKONOS, and QuickBird provided higher-resolution optical views. These images show a dark, oblong shape partially obscured by ice and shadow, its appearance changing with seasonal melt.
Advanced techniques like Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), used by satellites such as Canada's Radarsat-1, can penetrate cloud cover and, to some extent, ice. Analysis of SAR data has suggested the presence of geometric, right-angled features beneath the ice. The interpretation of satellite imagery, especially in complex glacial environments, is prone to ambiguity.
The scientific consensus points toward a natural geological explanation. Mount Ararat is a large, dormant stratovolcano composed of layers of lava flows and pyroclastic debris. Geologists argue that the "anomaly" is likely a rock outcropping, a specific type of lava flow, or a glacial moraine. The linear shapes and apparent symmetry can be created by natural processes of rock fracturing, erosion, and the dynamics of glacial ice, which can carve, move, and expose underlying rock in ways that mimic artificial structures.
