A tear in the Earth's crust
Beneath the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, a tectonic drama is unfolding in slow motion. The Andaman Basin Spreading Center is a divergent plate boundary, a place where the seafloor is actively tearing apart. This process separates the small Burma Plate from the larger Sunda Plate, creating new oceanic crust at a rate of approximately 38 millimeters per year. This slow-spreading ridge is an important feature in the complex tectonic puzzle of Southeast Asia, connected to the Sagaing Fault in the north and the Great Sumatra Fault in the south.
The spreading center began its activity around 4 million years ago, rifting apart what was once a single morphological structure—the Alcock and Sewell Rises. It now consists of a rift valley, 400 to 600 meters deep, lying on the flat, sediment-covered basin floor at a depth of about 3,000 meters. The valley is heavily sedimented, with deposits up to 2 kilometers thick in places, largely fed by the massive outflow of the Irrawaddy River to the north. This thick sediment blanket buries much of the rugged terrain typically associated with mid-ocean ridges. The spreading center's activity is not always smooth; it has been the site of multiple earthquake swarms, including notable sequences in 1984, 2006, and 2009.
Life without sunlight
The geological activity of the spreading ridge gives rise to another remarkable feature: hydrothermal vents. Discovered in 2006, these vents are fissures in the seafloor that discharge geothermally heated, mineral-rich water. These deep-sea hot springs create an environment that supports dense communities of life, but not through photosynthesis. In place of sunlight, the base of the food web relies on chemosynthesis. Microbes harness chemical energy from compounds like hydrogen sulfide spewing from the vents to produce organic matter.
This process fuels a unique ecosystem populated by animals adapted to extreme pressure, darkness, and high temperatures. The communities here are distinct from other known vent systems in the Indian Ocean. While many Indian Ocean vents are dominated by species like the shrimp Rimicaris or various mussels and tubeworms, the specific fauna of the Andaman vents suggests a different evolutionary path, possibly with connections to the ecosystems of the Western Pacific. The animals that live here—including specialized shrimp, crabs, mussels, and clams—often have symbiotic relationships with chemosynthetic bacteria, hosting the microbes within their own tissues. The discovery of these vents continues to reveal new species and shows how life disperses between these deep-sea oases.
