A river runs under it
Beneath the sands of the Thar Desert lies the ghost of a river. Hidden from view, a vast network of dry river channels, known as palaeochannels, marks the former course of a major waterway. Scientists using satellite remote sensing and radar have mapped this extinct system, revealing a channel that was, in places, up to 10 kilometers wide. This subterranean map corresponds with the Ghaggar-Hakra riverbed, a river that is intermittent today, flowing only during the monsoon season. For centuries, many believed this lost river was a myth, but modern science confirms its past existence.
This ancient river system supported the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC), one of the world's earliest urban cultures. Flourishing between 3300 and 1300 BCE, numerous Harappan settlements, including major sites like Kalibangan and Rakhigarhi, were built along its banks. In fact, over 500 Harappan sites have been discovered along the dried-up Ghaggar-Hakra, and more than along the Indus River itself. These cities developed complex water management and agricultural systems, thriving in what is now an arid region. The discovery of these settlements in a now-desert environment shows a dramatically different climate in the past.
The vanishing act
The river's disappearance was not a single event, but a gradual process driven by powerful natural forces. Tectonic shifts in the Himalayas altered the landscape, capturing the Ghaggar-Hakra's main glacial tributaries. Research shows the Sutlej River, once a major tributary, changed its course between 15,000 and 8,000 years ago, long before the peak of the Harappan civilization. The Yamuna river also shifted eastward, diverting its water to the Ganges system.
These geological changes left the Ghaggar-Hakra as a monsoon-fed river, its flow dependent on seasonal rains. The final blow came around 4,200 years ago (c. 2200 BCE) with the onset of a prolonged, widespread drought that weakened the monsoons. Without its glacial sources and with dwindling seasonal rains, the river's flow diminished until it became the seasonal stream seen today, eventually disappearing beneath the encroaching desert sands. This environmental shift coincides with the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization, which reorganized into smaller, more localized settlements as its great river dried up. The abandoned cities, preserved in the arid landscape, remain to the river that once gave them life.
