A molecular portrait of scarcity
The prized fragrance of sandalwood oil from Sumba comes from a specific class of organic molecules called sesquiterpenols. The essential oil distilled from the heartwood of the Santalum album tree is a mixture, but its value is almost entirely determined by the concentration of two isomers: alpha-santalol and beta-santalol. Together, these two compounds can make up 90% of the oil's composition. Alpha-santalol, typically the more abundant of the two at a concentration of 40-55%, is primarily responsible for the oil's calming physiological effects. Beta-santalol, present at 15-25%, contributes to the oil's complex aroma and antiseptic qualities.
For centuries, Sumba was an important source of this fragrant wood for traders from China, India, and the Middle East. The island became known as "Sandalwood Island," and its forests were aggressively harvested. This centuries-long process of removing the most valuable trees led to a severe population decline and genetic bottleneck. The species, Santalum album, is now classified as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List. The over-exploitation dramatically altered the genetic makeup of the remaining wild trees, a human-driven evolutionary pressure that threatened the species with local extinction. By the late 20th century, sandalwood oil factories in the provincial capital of Kupang were shutting down due to a lack of raw materials.
The science of revival
The near-disappearance of Sumba's sandalwood prompted a scientific response to conserve and restore the species. This effort focuses on understanding and propagating the remaining genetic diversity. Researchers use molecular markers, specifically simple sequence repeats (SSRs), to analyze the genetic structure of the surviving sandalwood populations across East Nusa Tenggara, including Sumba, Timor, and Flores. These genetic studies reveal how related different populations are and identify remaining pockets of high genetic diversity, which are important for breeding programs. An Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) showed that 8% of the total genetic variation exists between regions, indicating distinct genetic profiles for islands like Sumba.
Conservation programs now involve establishing sandalwood seed production areas and rehabilitation sites. Scientists are identifying individual trees with genetic markers for high santalol content and using techniques like grafting and micropropagation to create new saplings. This ensures that the replanted forests will produce high-quality oil. The provincial government has initiated large-scale replanting efforts, distributing seedlings to local communities through programs like the "Family Sandalwood Movement" to encourage cultivation on private land. This scientific approach is a shift from exploitation to managed cultivation, aiming to resurrect the island's most famous export by rebuilding its population with genetically superior stock.
