An ocean engine
The Savu Sea, positioned between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, appears tropical and nutrient-poor at the surface, but it is a powerful natural engine. This engine is a seasonal upwelling system, driven by the convergence of two massive oceanographic phenomena: the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) and powerful monsoon winds. The ITF is a constant, immense flow of warm, relatively low-salinity water from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean, pouring through the complex straits and seas of the Indonesian archipelago.
From roughly May to October, the southeast monsoon winds blow across the sea's surface. This wind action, combined with the Earth's rotation, creates a force known as Ekman transport, which pushes the warm surface water away from the coast. To replace this displaced surface water; cold, nutrient-dense water is pulled up from depths of 200 meters or more. This process dramatically alters the local sea conditions. Satellite data shows sea surface temperatures can drop significantly, while concentrations of nitrates, phosphates, and silicates skyrocket. The upwelling is so pronounced that chlorophyll-a concentrations, a proxy for phytoplankton, can be tenfold higher in the Savu Sea than in the adjacent Indian Ocean.
A cetacean superhighway
The sudden injection of nutrients into the sunlit surface layer triggers enormous phytoplankton blooms. This explosion of life forms the base of a temporary, but incredibly rich, food web. The phytoplankton feeds zooplankton, which in turn supports dense schools of small fish and krill. This abundance of food is precisely what attracts large marine animals, transforming the Savu Sea into an important feeding ground and migratory corridor.
The area supports at least 20 species of cetaceans (whales and dolphins), it is a global hotspot for marine mammal diversity. Among these are endangered pygmy blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus brevicauda), which travel from waters off Western Australia to the Banda Sea, using the Savu Sea as a foraging stop. Satellite tagging of a blue whale showed it diving frequently to over 200 meters during the daytime, a pattern consistent with foraging behavior through the thermocline, the boundary between warm surface water and the cold, upwelled water.
Other large species regularly found here include sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), Bryde's whales, and humpback whales. The sea also hosts a wide array of dolphins, with spinner dolphins being the most frequently observed species. The deep channels and straits, such as the Ombai Strait, act as funnels, concentrating both the migrating animals and their food sources. The ecological importance of the area led to the establishment of the Savu Sea National Park in 2014, Indonesia's largest marine protected area, covering over 3.35 million hectares.
