An Island of Miniatures
The island of Flores was a world shaped by isolation. For hundreds of thousands of years, its dominant large herbivore was not a buffalo or a deer, but Stegodon florensis insularis—a pygmy version of a mainland elephant relative. This animal was a product of insular dwarfism, an evolutionary process where species shrink over generations in response to the limited resources of an island environment.
The later subspecies, Stegodon florensis insularis, stood about 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) tall at the shoulder and weighed around 570 kilograms (1,260 lbs). This is a significant reduction from its earlier, larger ancestor on the island, Stegodon florensis florensis, which was about 1.9 meters tall and weighed over 1,500 kilograms. The island even hosted an earlier, smaller species, Stegodon sondaari, which was only 1.2 meters tall. These stegodonts were successful grazers and mixed feeders, sharing their strange ecosystem with giant marabou storks, vultures, and the apex predator of the island, the Komodo dragon.
Fossils, primarily found in the limestone cave of Liang Bua, show that these miniature giants were a long-standing feature of the island's fauna. They navigated an environment that fluctuated between wetter periods and intensely dry seasons, a cycle dictated by the Indonesian-Australian summer monsoon.
An Abrupt Vanishing
The last fossil evidence for Stegodon florensis dates to approximately 50,000 years ago. Its disappearance coincides with major ecological and demographic shifts on Flores. For much of its existence, the pygmy stegodon shared the island with another dwarfed species, the archaic human Homo floresiensis, often called the "Flores hobbit." Evidence from Liang Bua cave, where remains of both species are found, contains stegodon bones with cut marks from stone tools. This confirms that Homo floresiensis butchered and consumed the animals. Recent studies suggest this was more likely opportunistic scavenging of carcasses left by Komodo dragons rather than active big-game hunting.
The extinction timeline places the stegodon's demise, along with that of Homo floresiensis, very close to the estimated arrival of modern humans (Homo sapiens) on Flores. Archaeological evidence, such as a distinct shift in the type of stone used for tools, suggests modern humans were present by about 46,000 years ago. This timing suggests pressure from a new, technologically advanced human species was the cause of the extinction.
Other factors may have contributed. Analysis of cave stalagmites indicates a period of extreme drought began around 61,000 years ago, peaking around 55,000 years ago. This intense climate shift could have drastically reduced freshwater sources and altered the grassland habitats the stegodon relied on, weakening the population and making it more vulnerable to other pressures.
