A tale of two populations
The Ruddy-headed Goose (Chloephaga rubidiceps) exists in two completely separate groups. One population, numbering around 40,000 individuals, lives year-round on the Falkland Islands and is thriving. The other, the continental population that breeds in the grasslands of Tierra del Fuego and southern Patagonia, is migratory and critically endangered, with fewer than 1,000 birds remaining. This migratory group nests in the south during the austral summer and travels over 1,800 kilometers north to wintering grounds in the southern part of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.
Genetic studies reveal these two populations have been isolated for approximately 200,000 years. They are now so genetically distinct that they are considered separate evolutionary units, meaning the robust Falklands population cannot be used to replenish the dwindling mainland group. The continental population, once a common sight in the Magellanic steppe, now faces extinction.
An ecosystem undone
The dramatic decline of the mainland Ruddy-headed Goose began with a case of misguided biological control. In 1951, the South American gray fox (Lycalopex griseus) was introduced to Tierra del Fuego to manage the exploding population of invasive European rabbits. The goose, which evolved without significant ground-based predators, nests in shallow scrapes on the open ground. This made nesting females, their eggs, and their goslings easy targets for the newly introduced foxes.
The problem was compounded by historical persecution. In 1931, the Argentinian government declared the species an "agricultural pest," which led to decades of population control measures, including the systematic destruction of hundreds of thousands of eggs. Though this status was later reversed and the bird is now protected, its numbers have never recovered from the combined pressures. Overgrazing by sheep has also removed the tall grasses the geese rely on to conceal their nests, further exposing them to predation. Conservation efforts now focus on predator control in important nesting areas and habitat restoration, which works but requires a sustained, large-scale effort to save the species.
