The forest giant
In the subpolar forests of Tierra del Fuego, the Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) is a conspicuous resident. As the largest woodpecker in South America, it measures between 36 and 45 centimeters in length. Males weigh 312–369 grams, while the slightly smaller females weigh 276–312 grams. The species exhibits clear sexual dimorphism: males have a brilliant crimson head and crest, while females possess a black head with a distinctive curled crest and a small red patch near the base of the bill.
These birds require vast, undisturbed territories of old-growth forest, primarily composed of southern beech trees of the genus Nothofagus. A single breeding pair needs a home range of at least 100 hectares, with some estimates reaching up to 500 hectares. Their diet consists mainly of wood-boring beetle larvae and spiders, which they extract by hammering into dead or decaying trees with their powerful, chisel-like beaks. They often forage in pairs or small family groups, spending most of the day actively searching for food.
A resonating call and keystone role
The soundscape of the Patagonian forest is often defined by the Magellanic Woodpecker's powerful drumming. Unlike the steady rapping of other species, their territorial call is a loud double-knock, a resonant sound used to communicate with mates and warn rivals over long distances. This drumming is a distinct acoustic signal, separate from the more methodical pecking used for foraging and nest excavation.
The species helps the health of the forest. As primary cavity nesters, they excavate large holes in trees for nesting and roosting. A new nest is carved out each breeding season, typically between 5 and 15 meters above the ground. After the woodpeckers move on, these cavities provide essential shelter for a host of other animals, including owls, parakeets, and small mammals. This is why the Magellanic Woodpecker is a keystone species, because its presence creates habitats that are necessary for the survival of other wildlife.
A fragmented kingdom
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently lists the Magellanic Woodpecker as a species of "Least Concern". Populations are facing increasing pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation. The clearance of native forests for logging and conversion to plantations destroys the old-growth trees these woodpeckers depend on for food and nesting. This fragmentation isolates populations, which can reduce genetic diversity. In some parts of its range, the species is now restricted to protected areas and relict forest patches. Invasive species, such as the American mink, also pose a new predatory threat in some regions.
