A Falcon Unlike Any Other
On the windswept islands at the southern edge of South America lives an unusual bird of prey, the Striated Caracara (Daptrius australis). While genetically a falcon, its behavior is like a raven or a parrot. These birds are known for their extreme curiosity and lack of fear towards humans, often approaching campsites to investigate backpacks and steal loose items. Charles Darwin noted their inquisitiveness during his voyage on the HMS Beagle in the 1830s, when one of the birds made off with his compass.
The Striated Caracara has a wingspan of 116-125 cm and has dark brownish-black plumage with fine white streaks around the neck and breast. They are highly social, often hunting in groups and walking along the ground rather than flying. This social structure and their generalist, opportunistic diet are believed to contribute to their advanced cognitive skills. The global population is small, estimated at under 2,500 mature individuals, making them a Near Threatened species. Their primary habitats are the rocky coastlines and tussock grasslands of Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands.
A Problem-Solving Mind
Recent studies confirm what observers have long suspected: the Striated Caracara is exceptionally intelligent. Research shows their problem-solving abilities are comparable to those of Goffin's cockatoos and corvids, birds widely considered benchmarks for avian intelligence. In one study, wild caracaras were presented with a puzzle box containing eight different mechanisms to access a food reward. All 15 tested birds solved at least one puzzle, and ten of them successfully completed all eight. They learned quickly, with one individual managing to solve all eight tasks in under five minutes after some practice.
This cognitive prowess is likely an adaptation to their harsh and unpredictable environment. During the summer, food is abundant in the form of seabird colonies. In the winter, resources become scarce, forcing the caracaras to be innovative and flexible foragers. Their diet is varied, including carrion, invertebrates dug from kelp, seabird eggs and chicks, and even weak lambs. Their intelligence is also reflected in their neuroanatomy; Striated Caracaras have relatively large brains and a high count of pallial neurons, the avian equivalent of the cerebral cortex, placing them among the top 13.5% of 111 bird species surveyed. This combination of curiosity and brainpower makes them a unique subject for understanding the evolution of intelligence.
