An inland sea of shells
In the uplands of what is now Thailand's Rayong Province, there are mounds composed almost entirely of discarded snail shells. These are not natural formations; they are middens, ancient refuse piles left by hunter-gatherers during the Late Pleistocene, between roughly 25,000 and 13,000 years ago. At that time, during the last glacial period, sea levels were significantly lower. The coastline of the Gulf of Thailand was located 100 to 120 kilometers further south than it is today. This region, now coastal, was then a forested, inland environment far from the sea.
The environment of Late Pleistocene Thailand was cooler and more arid than it is at present. The landscape was a mosaic of savanna and seasonal deciduous forest. Hunter-gatherer groups, sometimes associated with the Hoabinhian culture, lived in this environment. Their diet included a variety of mammals, reptiles, and plants, but the middens show a heavy reliance on freshwater snails. The sheer volume of shells indicates a systematic, long-term harvesting of this resource. These middens are stratified archaeological deposits, with layers of shells building up over millennia, recording human activity and diet.
The dominant species found in these inland middens is the terrestrial operculate snail Cyclophorus fulguratus, a type of land snail that thrives in forest environments. The presence of this species, along with other freshwater mollusks, confirms that the people who created these mounds lived in an inland setting with access to freshwater resources, not a coastal one.
Reading a 25,000-year-old menu
Zooarchaeology, the study of animal remains from archaeological sites, turns these mountains of shells into a detailed history book. Analysis of the shells reveals much about the diet and behavior of these prehistoric people. The snails were an important and readily available source of protein and minerals. Evidence of heating on some shells suggests they were cooked, perhaps roasted in embers to make the meat easier to extract. The consistent processing of vast numbers of snails points to an efficient and established subsistence strategy.
These middens are also important paleoenvironmental archives. The specific species of mollusks present act as proxies, indicating the local environmental conditions at the time of their collection. The shift from purely terrestrial and freshwater species in the oldest layers to the eventual abandonment of these sites corresponds with major climatic changes at the end of the Pleistocene. As the glaciers melted, sea levels rose, gradually transforming the landscape. The inland forests changed, and the coastline advanced, eventually reaching its present-day position around 6,000 years ago. This environmental shift would have altered the available resources, forcing human populations to adapt their hunting and gathering strategies.
The Rayong middens are a silent evidence to a lost world. They exist because the former coastline is now deep underwater, and any shell middens located there have long since been destroyed by the rising sea. These inland sites show the lives of people who inhabited Southeast Asia's Late Pleistocene interior.
