A basin carved by salt and wind
The Qattara Depression is a vast basin in Egypt's Western Desert, covering approximately 19,605 square kilometers, an area comparable in size to Lake Ontario. Its lowest point sits 133 meters (436 feet) below sea level, making it the second-lowest point in Africa. The depression's unique teardrop shape was primarily formed by salt weathering and powerful wind erosion acting over millennia. This process began in the late Neogene period, when salts broke down the Eocene limestone bedrock, allowing the wind to carry away the fragmented particles.
The landscape is a harsh mix of salt pans, shifting sand dunes, and extensive dry lake beds that occasionally flood. Its northern edge is defined by a steep, dramatic escarpment that rises up to 280 meters. The floor itself is not uniform; about a quarter of the area consists of dry lakes with a hard crust that conceals sticky mud, making much of the terrain impassable for vehicles. This treacherous nature famously created a natural barrier during the World War II Battle of El Alamein, preventing military vehicles from outflanking the British defense lines. Within this desolate expanse lies the uninhabited Moghra Oasis, which features a 4-square-kilometer brackish lake and is a significant water source for nomadic Bedouin herds.
