A Divine Endorsement in the Desert
In 331 BCE, Alexander the Great made a perilous trip deep into Egypt's Western Desert to the Temple of the Oracle of Amun. Having conquered Egypt from the Persians, he sought divine validation to rule as pharaoh. Egyptian tradition held that the pharaoh was the son of the primary deity, Amun. For the Greeks, Amun was synonymous with Zeus. The oracle's proclamation that Alexander was the son of Zeus-Amun was a politically astute move, establishing his legitimacy in the eyes of the Egyptian people. After this consultation, coins were minted showing Alexander with the ram's horns of Amun, a clear symbol of his new divine status.
The temple itself stands on the Aghurmi mound, a natural acropolis about 4 kilometers from the modern town of Siwa. Archaeological evidence dates its construction to the 26th Dynasty, specifically during the reign of Pharaoh Amasis II (570-526 BCE). This places its origins well before Alexander's famous visit. The oracle's reputation was so widespread that even the Lydian king Croesus consulted it around 549 BCE. The method of divination likely involved priests interpreting the movements of a sacred boat carrying a statue of Amun. The structure's inner sanctuary, where the oracle was delivered, still contains damaged hieroglyphic inscriptions.
An Oasis Powered by Fossil Water
The existence of this influential temple in such a remote desert location comes from the region's unique geology. The Siwa Oasis sits in a depression that reaches approximately 19 meters below sea level. This low elevation allows underground water to reach the surface, creating around 200 natural springs that sustain the oasis.
The water source is the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, one of the largest fossil water aquifers on Earth. This vast underground reservoir contains water that has been there for an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 years. The local geology is characterized by Miocene-era limestone, marl, and clay. The temple and other ancient structures in the area were built from this local saline limestone. The high salt content of the building materials, combined with the arid climate, has affected both the preservation and the specific types of deterioration seen in the ruins today. The influence of the oracle waned during the Roman period; the historian Strabo noted its declining importance when he visited in 23 BCE.
