The ancient leaper that wasn't
In 1873, the famous anatomist Richard Owen examined the front portion of a fossil skull from Gippsland, Victoria, and named it Palorchestes azael. Believing its teeth resembled a kangaroo's, he gave it a name from Greek meaning "ancient leaper". This classification stood for over 80 years. It was not until 1958 that researcher Jack T. Woods correctly identified Palorchestes not as a giant kangaroo, but as a member of the order Diprotodontia, more closely related to wombats and koalas. This reclassification began to reveal the true, strange nature of this Ice Age beast.
The largest species, P. azael, was a formidable animal, roughly the size of a horse or buffalo. It stood about 2.5 meters long, and body mass estimates using its limb bones suggest it weighed over 1,000 kilograms. Its most distinct feature was its skull. The nasal bones were highly retracted, sitting far back near the eye sockets. This anatomy led to the popular nickname "marsupial tapir," indicating the animal had a fleshy trunk. While some recent analysis points to well-developed prehensile lips instead, the trunk theory is a common interpretation of the fossil evidence. The lower jaw also shows a long, protrusible tongue, similar to a giraffe's, for manipulating foliage.
A powerful browsing machine
Palorchestes was a powerful herbivore, a selective browser that fed on coarse vegetation, shrubs, and roots. Its anatomy was adapted for this task. The forelimbs were immensely powerful and bore large, compressed, scimitar-like claws, similar to those of a koala. These were not for digging burrows but likely for pulling and hooking branches or stripping bark from trees. Studies of its elbow joint show an unusually limited range of motion, suggesting its forelimbs would sprawl when walking on all fours. This has led to theories that Palorchestes may have fed in a bipedal or tripodal posture, perhaps leaning against a tree for support while using its claws and long tongue to reach high foliage.
Fossils of Palorchestes azael are found across eastern Australia, from Queensland to South Australia's Naracoorte Caves and into Tasmania. The first specimen described by Owen, and one of the best-preserved skulls, came from the Gippsland region of Victoria, specifically from limestone caves near the town of Buchan. These fossils are rare, suggesting that Palorchestes was likely a solitary animal. The last of its kind vanished during the Late Pleistocene megafauna extinction event, approximately 40,000 years ago, which coincided with major environmental shifts and the arrival of the first humans in Australia.
