The brass coils worn by Kayan Lahwi women are a record of a specific metallurgical practice. The alloy is primarily brass, a combination of copper and zinc, but the exact composition and the presence of trace elements can function like a fingerprint, pointing to the original sources of the ore. Traditional brass-working in Myanmar, known as Pantin, is a craft with roots that predate the Bagan period. Artisans in regions like Mandalay have historically been the center of bronze and brass casting, creating items ranging from gongs to religious statues.
The production of these coils relies on techniques passed down through generations. The process involves melting the metal, casting it, and then working it into the final shape. While specific analyses of the Kayan coils are not widely published, the metallurgical principles are clear. The specific ratio of copper to zinc, along with impurities like lead, tin, or arsenic, would vary depending on the geological source of the raw minerals. A detailed isotopic analysis could distinguish between different regional mines, revealing historic trade routes and the extent of the Kayan people's resource network. The cost of the brass wire itself has been significant, with a full set of rings costing as much as 250,000 kyatts ($250 USD) in recent decades, indicating the material's value.
Forging and Forming the Coils
The creation of a neck coil is a physically demanding process. The brass is first heated until malleable and then formed into a long, continuous rod. This rod is then painstakingly bent around a form to create the spiral shape. The process is done entirely by hand, relying on the artisan's skill to achieve a uniform thickness and a tight, even coil. This traditional craft is part of a broader history of metalworking in Myanmar that includes casting large temple bells and complex brass weights.
The coils are first fitted to girls as young as five years old. As the girl grows, the initial coil is replaced with a longer, heavier one. This process might be repeated several times throughout a woman's life, with the final set of coils weighing up to 13-15 kilograms. Some reports mention coils weighing as much as 20 kilograms. The weight of the coils does not lengthen the neck itself. It exerts constant pressure on the clavicles and rib cage, causing them to deform and slope downwards at an angle of up to 45 degrees. This creates the visual illusion of an elongated neck. Radiographic studies confirm this skeletal modification, showing the depressed position of the clavicles in wearers.
