An agricultural system that floats
The Intha people, whose name means "sons of the lake," have engineered a unique form of hydroponic agriculture in the shallow waters of Inle Lake. This system relies on floating gardens, or ye-chan, which cover roughly 25% of the lake's surface. These fertile, buoyant islands are not built on soil, but are constructed from the lake's own biomass. Farmers gather lake-bottom weeds and invasive water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), weaving them into dense mats up to a meter thick. These mats are anchored to the lakebed, which is between 1 and 5 meters deep, using long bamboo poles. A final layer of nutrient-rich mud is dredged from the lake floor and spread across the top, creating a productive planting medium.
This agricultural method allows the Intha to cultivate crops year-round. The gardens rise and fall with the seasonal water levels, making them resilient to flooding. The primary cash crop is tomatoes, famous throughout Myanmar, but farmers also grow gourds, cucumbers, beans, and flowers. This system is an adaptation to an environment where solid ground is scarce. For generations, it provided a sustainable way for the Intha to feed their families, existing in relative balance with the lake's ecosystem.
From subsistence to market pressures
The subsistence ecology of the Intha has changed dramatically over the last several decades. What was once a system focused on local consumption has shifted to intensive market production. The expansion of floating gardens accelerated in the 1960s, and a 40-year analysis showed these gardens increased in area by 390%. This intensification is driven by population growth and the economic lure of tourism. High-yield tomato varieties have replaced many traditional crops, but they require significant inputs of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals are applied directly onto the gardens and, by extension, into the lake itself.
This shift has ecological consequences. Nutrient loading from agricultural runoff causes algal blooms and unchecked aquatic weed growth. Siltation from deforestation in the surrounding hills is causing the lake to shrink. The lake's fish populations, including more than 13 endemic species, are threatened by pollution, overfishing, and the introduction of invasive species like tilapia. The Inle carp (Cyprinus intha) is now primarily sustained through aquaculture, and another endemic fish, Systomus compressiformis, has not been seen in years and may be extinct. This shows the fragile balance between a unique human culture and the freshwater ecosystem that supports it.
