An intentional ocean crossing
Deep within a limestone cave on the island of Okinoerabu, archaeologists uncovered simple stone tools that fundamentally changed our understanding of Paleolithic human capabilities. These artifacts, dated to between 35,000 and 30,000 years ago, provide solid evidence for one of the earliest known sea voyages. Okinoerabu is part of the Ryukyu Islands, a 1,200-kilometer-long chain that was never connected to the Asian mainland by a land bridge. The only way for humans to reach it was by deliberately crossing the open ocean.
The discovery proves that Homo sapiens in this era possessed the skills to build watercraft capable of surviving a difficult sea journey. Simulations of ocean currents show that accidentally drifting to the islands was extremely unlikely. The powerful Kuroshio Current, one of the strongest in the world, would have pushed any unguided vessel away from the island chain. Therefore, the people who made this trip did so intentionally, navigating with purpose into an area they could not see from their departure point.
Paleolithic mariners and their world
The trip to the Ryukyus was not a short island hop. It required a sea crossing of significant distance, likely from Taiwan or mainland Japan. To test the feasibility, a research team led by Yousuke Kaifu of the University of Tokyo made an experimental voyage in 2019. They built a 7.5-meter dugout canoe using replica stone-age tools and successfully paddled 225 kilometers from Taiwan to Yonaguni Island in 45 hours, navigating without modern instruments. Their success demonstrated that such a journey was possible with Paleolithic technology, but required advanced knowledge of currents and navigation.
The presence of humans in the Ryukyus 35,000 years ago is part of the history of sea expansion across the Western Pacific. While the Okinoerabu tools are evidence, other sites in the region, like the Sakitari Cave on Okinawa, have yielded even older human remains and artifacts, including 23,000-year-old shell fishhooks. These finds collectively show that the ancestors of modern Japanese people were sophisticated mariners, well-adapted to island life and capable of planned, long-distance sea travel.
