The Tannic Acid Bath
The deep, lustrous black of Kumejima tsumugi silk begins not with mud, but with a plant. Weavers on the island of Kumejima have a process that originated in the 15th century, starting with the wood of a local tree known as techigi or sharinbai (Rhaphiolepis indica var. umbellata). This wood is boiled for hours to extract its high concentration of polyphenolic compounds, specifically tannic acid.
Silk threads, derived from hand-spun cocoons, are repeatedly submerged in this hot, reddish-brown tannin solution. After each dip, the threads are dried, allowing the large tannin molecules to permeate and bind to the fibroin protein of the silk. This laborious step, which can involve dozens of repetitions over many days, slowly stains the silk a deep brown. Other local plants, such as guru (Smilax china), are also used to create different base shades before the mud-dyeing process begins. This initial stage loads it loads the silk fibers with the chemical precursors necessary for the final color transformation.
The Iron-Rich Mordant
The second stage of the process, called dorozome, involves the island's unique mud. The silk, now saturated with tannic acid, is taken to specific iron-rich mud pits, often located in rice paddies. Weavers knead the threads into the viscous, mineral-laden mud by hand. Here, a classic chemical reaction occurs. Iron ions (Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺) present in the mud act as a mordant, a substance that fixes a dye to a material.
The iron ions form a coordination complex with the hydroxyl groups on the tannin molecules already attached to the silk. This creates ferric tannate, a dark, water-insoluble pigment. It is this newly formed compound that gives Kumejima tsumugi its characteristic deep, almost black color. The insolubility of ferric tannate is what makes the dye incredibly colorfast, resistant to fading from both washing and sunlight. The entire cycle of plant-dyeing and mud-dyeing is repeated many times—sometimes over 100 cycles of dyeing are required for a single batch of thread—to achieve the desired depth of color, a process that can take months to complete. The mud also has the secondary effect of softening the silk fibers, resulting in a supple and durable final fabric.
