A different kind of time capsule
Nong Han Kumphawapi presents a geological puzzle. While the idea of a deep, permanently stratified lake with ancient "dead" water is compelling, the lake itself is a vast, shallow freshwater system, typically no more than one or two meters deep. Its water column is fully mixed by wind and currents. The scientific story is not in the water, in the rock hundreds of feet below and the mud settled at its bottom.
The lake sits within the Sakon Nakhon Basin, directly over a massive geological feature called the Maha Sarakham Formation. Dating to the Cretaceous period, this formation contains enormous layers of rock salt (halite), gypsum, and anhydrite. These are the remnants of a long-vanished inland sea that existed 90-110 million years ago. In the area around the lake, these salt deposits lie 50 to 100 meters below the ground. The entire lake basin likely owes its existence to this buried salt. Over millennia, groundwater slowly dissolves the subterranean salt beds, causing the land above to gradually sink—a process called subsidence. So, while the lake's water is fresh, it rests in a depression created by a hidden, dissolving sea.
A 10,000-year climate archive
The mud at the bottom of Nong Han Kumphawapi holds a detailed environmental record. Scientists have drilled sediment cores deep into the lakebed to read this history. The data shows that this landscape has undergone dramatic transformations.
Analysis of pollen and sediment layers reveals a detailed timeline. Between 9,800 and 7,000 years ago, the region experienced a much wetter climate under a stronger summer monsoon. The permanent lake or swamp that exists today first formed around 6,500 years before present. The record also shows a prolonged dry period between approximately 5,200 and 3,200 years ago, when much of the open water vanished and the area became a peat-forming bog. After this dry spell, wetland conditions returned. This continuous archive makes the lake's sediments, and its water, a time capsule, documenting millennia of climate change. The surface, meanwhile, is famous for a vast, seasonal bloom of pink tropical water lilies from December to February, a phenomenon known as the "Red Lotus Sea".
