A Miocene Graveyard
In the Riversleigh World Heritage Area of northwestern Queensland, a limestone cave deposit known as AL90 holds an entire community of skeletons. This site, dating to the Middle Miocene Epoch about 15 million years ago, acted as a natural pitfall trap. For millennia, animals moving through the lush rainforest canopy would occasionally fall through the vegetation-obscured opening, creating a perfectly preserved collection of Australia's ancient fauna. The most numerous resident of this prehistoric tomb is Nimbadon lavarackorum, a sheep-sized marsupial distantly related to modern wombats and koalas.
Paleontologists have recovered more than 30 skulls and numerous complete, articulated skeletons from the AL90 site. The collection represents individuals of all ages, from suckling pouch-young to old adults, showing a single population. Before the discovery of these complete skeletons, researchers assumed most diprotodontoids—the family to which Nimbadon belongs—were ground-dwelling animals, with some growing to the size of a rhinoceros. The pristine, three-dimensional preservation of the Nimbadon fossils, uncrushed in the soft freshwater limestone, completely changed this understanding.
Built for the Canopy
Analysis of the Nimbadon skeleton reveals an animal expertly adapted for life in the trees. At around 70 kilograms, it is the largest known tree-dwelling marsupial herbivore. Its anatomy shows striking similarities to the modern koala, particularly in its limbs. Nimbadon possessed powerful forelimbs with highly mobile shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, which allowed for significant rotation and extension—essential movements for navigating a tree canopy.
Its hands and feet were exceptionally large, equipped with long, flexible digits and a semi-opposable first digit for grasping. The most formidable features were its massive, sharp re-curved claws, capable of digging deep into tree trunks for a secure grip. This suggests Nimbadon used a trunk-hugging climbing style, much like a koala. Its short hindlimbs relative to its forelimbs may also indicate it was capable of hanging from branches. Dental analysis shows it was a browser that ate soft vegetation, leaves, stems, and possibly fruit. The species disappeared around 12 to 15 million years ago as Australia's climate began to dry and its extensive rainforests receded.
