A Restaurant for Raptors
Monfragüe National Park is an important refuge for Europe's largest flying birds. The park's rugged cliffs and expansive forests support significant populations of three vulture species: the massive Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus), the colonial Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), and the migratory Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus). These birds are obligate scavengers, relying entirely on finding dead animals for food.
In the early 2000s, their primary food source vanished. Regulations enacted by the European Union to combat Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), or "mad cow disease," mandated the removal and incineration of all livestock carcasses from the countryside. This public health measure inadvertently triggered a food crisis for vulture populations across Spain, which hosts 90% of Europe's avian scavengers. With their food supply gone, the survival of these essential decomposers was threatened.
Conservation scientists and park authorities responded by establishing a network of supplementary feeding stations. Known locally as muladares or comederos, these "vulture restaurants" provide a consistent and safe source of carrion. Carcasses from local farms, certified to be free of toxins and veterinary drugs harmful to vultures, are deposited at these designated sites.
Data-Driven Conservation
To measure the effectiveness of the feeding stations, scientists attached GPS transmitters to vultures, tracking their movements in detail. The data revealed that young vultures would travel distances of over 100 kilometers to visit the feeding sites. This information confirmed that the restaurants were being used by birds from a wide geographical area.
The most significant finding came from analyzing survival rates. The data showed a direct link between the feeding program and vulture demographics. For juvenile Cinereous Vultures, a species classified as Near Threatened, access to this reliable food source increased their annual survival rate by 40%. This success provided clear, quantitative proof that targeted conservation actions can reverse the decline of a threatened species. The program helps the most vulnerable birds and is designed to be selective, using fenced areas or elevated platforms to prioritize access for threatened species over the more numerous Griffon Vultures.
