A Cemetery Aligned with the Cosmos
On three hills near Khodjeyli, Uzbekistan, lies the sprawling Mizdahkan Necropolis, a city of the dead covering 200 hectares. The site contains thousands of burials dating from its founding in the 4th century BCE to its final burials in the 14th century CE. This complex is both a cemetery and an astronomical observatory built from graves. The orientations of its tombs, constructed over centuries, map a slow, predictable wobble in the Earth's axis.
The necropolis sits beside the ruins of the Gyaur-Kala fortress, a trade and craft center along a branch of the Silk Road. The original inhabitants were predominantly Zoroastrians, a fact reflected in their unique burial practices. Instead of interring bodies, which would pollute the sacred earth, they practiced excarnation. Bodies were left on towers, called dakhmas, to be consumed by birds of prey. The cleaned bones were then collected in ceramic boxes called ossuaries and placed in tombs.
Researchers examining the placement of these ossuaries discovered a systematic pattern. Tombs from different eras do not share the same orientation. Instead, they rotate gradually over time. This alignment shift is not random or a result of changing cultural preferences. It directly corresponds to the precession of the equinoxes, the 25,800-year cycle of the Earth's axial wobble. The ancient people of Mizdahkan were aligning their tombs for the dead with the north celestial pole, the apparent center of the heavens, which they considered a gateway to the afterlife. As the Earth's axis wobbled, the star marking that celestial pole changed, and the community adjusted the orientation of their burials to follow it.
Reading the Earth's Motion in Stone
The builders of Mizdahkan created a multi-generational science experiment without realizing it. Their consistent religious practice, maintained over more than 1,700 years, produced a precise record of long-term celestial motion. The earliest burials from around the 4th century BCE point to one location in the sky, while tombs built after the Arab invasions of the 8th century CE, which introduced Islam to the region, point to another. This change in burial customs from Zoroastrian ossuaries to Islamic interment did not interrupt the celestial alignment, suggesting a deep-rooted astronomical tradition that persisted across religious shifts.
The city of Mizdahkan itself was a significant regional center until it was destroyed in 1221 by the Mongol invasion. A second, final destruction occurred in 1338 during a campaign by Timur (Tamerlane), after which the site was used only as a necropolis.
Today, the site is a large outdoor museum of architecture and belief. Structures include the semi-underground Mausoleum of Mazlum Khan Slu (12th-14th centuries) and the ruins of the Mausoleum of Khalifa Erezhep. The entire complex, combining the Gyaur-Kala fortress and the necropolis, shows how ancient peoples observed the sky and encoded their astronomical knowledge into the most permanent structures they built.
