A Delta in Motion
The Amu Darya, known to the ancient Greeks as the Oxus River, is a major waterway of Central Asia, rising in the Pamir Mountains and flowing across deserts to its delta. For millennia, this river has been a source of life, but its course has been unstable. The river is prone to a process called avulsion, where a river abruptly abandons its channel to form a new one. This happens because the Amu Darya carries an immense load of sediment. As sediment deposits at the river's mouth, it raises the level of the channel until the river, often during a major flood, breaks its banks and carves a steeper, more efficient path toward its final destination, the Aral Sea.
This process has led to the entire Amu Darya delta shifting its location multiple times. Over the past few thousand years, the river's main channel has jumped across the region, building and abandoning a series of delta lobes. These shifts had deep consequences for human settlement. The Khorezm oasis, a civilization that flourished in the delta for nearly 2,000 years, saw its cities rise and fall with the river's whims. Arab geographers documented how the medieval capital, Kath, was deserted due to the silting up of riverbeds. The celebrated city of Kunya-Urgench was flooded by the Mongols in 1221 when they destroyed a dam, and its final decline was sealed when the Amu Darya shifted away permanently in the 16th century.
The Modern Delta
In the 20th century, the dynamic nature of the Amu Darya was arrested by human intervention on an unprecedented scale. Beginning in the 1950s and 60s, the Soviet Union initiated massive irrigation projects to support a burgeoning cotton industry, which they called "white gold". This involved the construction of thousands of kilometers of canals, including the Karakum Canal, one of the largest in the world. These projects diverted nearly all the water from the Amu Darya and the region's other major river, the Syr Darya, before it could reach the Aral Sea.
The consequences have been catastrophic. The Aral Sea, once the fourth-largest lake on Earth, has shrunk to about 10% of its original size. Its retreat exposed a 60,000-square-kilometer seabed of salt and sand, creating the world's youngest desert: the Aralkum. This new desert is a cause of intense dust storms that carry salt, pesticides and other agricultural chemical residues far and wide. This toxic dust has been found in the glaciers of Greenland and even in the blood of penguins in Antarctica. The delta ecosystem, once a vast expanse of wetlands and lakes, has been decimated, and local communities have suffered severe health and economic impacts.
