Ancient refuse, modern data
In the Kyzyl Kum desert of Karakalpakstan, along the ancient Akcha Darya delta, lie enormous heaps of discarded shells. These are natural formations, not kitchen middens—prehistoric garbage dumps—left by the Kelteminar culture, a Neolithic society of fishers and foragers who lived here between 5500 and 3500 BCE. First identified in 1939 by archaeologist S. P. Tolstov, the culture is named after a nearby abandoned canal. The people were semi-sedentary, living without agriculture or domesticated animals, relying instead on the resources of the rivers and the lake that is now the Aral Sea.
The middens record daily life. Composed primarily of countless mollusc shells, they also contain fish bones, remains of hunted animals like wild boar, and cultural artifacts. Kelteminar artisans produced pottery with pointed bases, often decorated with incised lines, and crafted tools like flint and quartz arrowheads. They lived in large, oval-shaped communal houses, sometimes measuring 24 by 17 meters, which may have sheltered an entire community of 100-120 people. These structures, along with the sheer volume of the shell deposits, show a long-term occupation of the Amu Darya river delta.
Reading the shells
The most significant story told by these middens comes from the shells themselves. The heaps are dominated by bivalve species that can only survive in freshwater. Their presence provides direct and conclusive evidence about the environment of the 6th and 5th millennia BCE. The species composition proves that the Aral Sea, which in the 20th century was a large saline lake, was once a completely freshwater body.
This finding fundamentally changes our understanding of the region's climate history. For the Aral Sea to have been fresh, the inflow from its two main tributaries, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, must have been substantially greater than in modern times. This points to a much wetter climate during the Atlantic Phase of the post-glacial optimum, a period of warmer and moister conditions. The Kelteminar people thrived in this lush delta environment, an area different from the hyper-arid desert that characterizes the region today. The shells they discarded thousands of years ago are now a data source for paleoclimatologists reconstructing the deep history of Central Asia's environment.
