A Colony Under Observation
Punta Tombo, a narrow, 3-kilometer-long peninsula on the coast of Argentina, hosts one of the world's most significant breeding colonies for Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus). Each September, hundreds of thousands of these birds arrive from their winter feeding grounds at sea to reclaim the same burrows they used in previous years. The males typically arrive first to prepare the nests, which are dug into the compact, sandy soil. The females follow, locating their lifelong mates through their distinct braying calls.
This colony has been the subject of a long-term research project initiated in 1982 by biologist Dr. Dee Boersma of the University of Washington. What began as an effort to protect the penguins from being harvested for industrial products has evolved into a detailed, multi-decade study of their population dynamics. Researchers have individually marked over 44,000 penguin chicks with flipper bands since 1983, allowing them to track the life histories, reproductive success, and foraging patterns of individual birds over generations. This continuous monitoring records of how the colony is responding to environmental pressures. Data shows the colony has declined by over 40% since 1987, when it was considered the world's largest for the species.
A Lengthening Search for Food
The extensive dataset from Punta Tombo reveals a direct link between penguin survival and the ocean's shifting conditions. The primary food source for these penguins during the breeding season is the Argentine anchovy, Engraulis anchoita. In recent decades, rising sea-surface temperatures have caused the distribution of these small, schooling fish to move farther south, away from the colony.
Satellite tracking of individual penguins shows the consequences of this shift. Foraging parents must now travel significantly farther to find food for their chicks. Round trips that once covered shorter distances now extend up to 600 kilometers and can last for several days. This increased travel time has a direct impact on chick survival. While one parent is away on an extended foraging trip, the other must guard the nest, often without food. The longer the trip, the higher the probability of chick starvation. Studies have shown that in some years, up to 40% of chicks die from starvation. This change in prey availability drives of the colony's declining reproductive success and overall population numbers. Beyond food scarcity, the penguins also face threats from increased storm frequency, which can flood burrows, and from oil pollution from shipping lanes.
