A Land in Motion
Peninsula Valdés is a region defined by slow, relentless geological power. The entire landmass is rising, a process driven by a interaction of tectonic forces in the Patagonian foreland. This gradual elevation is recorded in a series of raised marine terraces—essentially, fossil beaches left stranded above the current sea level. These terraces are a natural timeline, documenting the peninsula's vertical rise.
The oldest and highest radiometrically dated terrace sits at an elevation of 33-35 meters and is estimated to be between 250,000 and 330,000 years old. Another significant marker corresponds to the last interglacial period, around 125,000 years ago (Marine Isotope Stage 5e), now found at 16-17 meters above sea level. More recent Holocene shorelines, from around 7,000 to 8,000 years ago, are found at 6-7 meters elevation. This pattern reveals an average uplift rate of about 0.09 to 0.14 millimeters per year. While imperceptible on a human timescale, this process fundamentally shapes the peninsula's existence.
Sculpted by Sea and Time
The peninsula's distinctive mushroom shape, with the large Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José separated by the narrow Carlos Ameghino Isthmus, is a direct result of this uplift interacting with erosion. The land is primarily composed of sedimentary rock layers from the Miocene epoch, which were deposited when the region was a shallow sea. One of the important layers is the Puerto Madryn Formation, a collection of sandstones and mudstones from the late Miocene.
As the land rose, these relatively soft sedimentary layers were exposed to the persistent Patagonian winds and the power of the Atlantic Ocean. The sea carved into the softer rock, creating the two large gulfs and the peninsula's 400-kilometer-long coastline of dramatic cliffs, some reaching 100 meters high. This constant erosion exposes a spectacular fossil record within the cliffs. These fossils confirm the marine origin of the rock and shows the ecosystems of the Miocene sea. Commonly found fossils include oysters (Ostrea maxima), scallops, sand dollars, and the teeth of extinct sharks like Carcharodon, an ancestor of the great white. The removal of any fossils from the protected area is strictly prohibited.
