A tectonic triple junction
Lake Assal occupies one of the most geologically active places on Earth, the Afar Triple Junction. This is a point where three tectonic plates—the Arabian, Nubian, and Somalian—are actively pulling apart at a rate of 1 to 2 centimeters per year. The lake is in a volcanic crater, a depression formed by this constant rifting, and its surface is 155 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point on the African continent.
The lake's water is not from rainfall, which is scarce in this hot desert climate. Instead, it is fed by seawater from the Gulf of Tadjoura, an extension of the Gulf of Aden. This seawater travels about 10 kilometers underground through fractured basaltic rock, emerging in geothermal springs that feed the lake. The inflow is estimated at 5,000 to 8,000 liters per second. With no outlet, the only escape for the water is through evaporation. Summer air temperatures can reach 52°C (126°F), leading to extreme evaporation rates and concentrating the dissolved minerals. This process creates a hypersaline environment where the salt concentration is about ten times that of the ocean.
Life in the brine
The salinity of Lake Assal averages 34.8%, or 348 grams of salt per liter of water. At a depth of 20 meters, this concentration can increase to nearly 40% (398 g/L). This makes it one of the most saline bodies of water on the planet, with a salinity higher than the Dead Sea's 33.7%. The chemical composition is also different; while the Dead Sea is high in magnesium chloride, Lake Assal is dominated by sodium chloride.
This extreme salt concentration makes the water inhospitable for most forms of life. However, a specialized group of microorganisms called halophiles, or "salt-lovers," thrive here. These are primarily bacteria and archaea adapted to survive in environments that would destroy other cells. The shores of the lake are covered in a stark white crust of salt, which can be up to 60 meters thick in some areas of the dry lake bed. This massive salt deposit, estimated at 300 million tonnes, has been a valuable resource for centuries. The local Afar people have traditionally harvested the salt, loading it onto camel caravans for trade in Ethiopia, where it was exchanged for goods like coffee and coal. This trade continues today, with both traditional and industrial mining operations active at the lake.
