A Genetically Unique Predator
The vast Kyzylkum Desert, a name that translates to "Red Sand," was once the habitat of a distinct population of the Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus). This subspecies roamed a territory that stretched from the Arabian Peninsula to the Caspian region and into northern South Asia. For centuries, these swift predators were an integral part of the arid and semi-arid ecosystems of what is now Uzbekistan. Their presence is a matter of historical accounts; it is recorded on the stones of the landscape and preserved in the fragments of their bones.
Genetic analysis of ancient cheetah remains reveals a significant evolutionary divergence from their African relatives. Studies of mitochondrial DNA show that Asiatic and African cheetah populations separated between 32,000 and 67,000 years ago. This finding contradicts earlier beliefs of a more recent split of only 5,000 years. The deep genetic break indicates that the cheetahs of Central Asia were not a recent offshoot but a unique lineage that had adapted to the region's specific environmental pressures over tens of thousands of years. This genetic distinctiveness makes their regional extinction an important loss of global biodiversity.
An Echo in the Rocks
In the Sarmishsay gorge, located on the edge of the Kyzylkum Desert about 30-40 kilometers from the city of Navoi, ancient artists carved more than 10,000 petroglyphs into the dark rock faces. Among the depictions of wild bulls, goats, and hunting scenes are clear images of large felines identified as cheetahs. These rock carvings, with the oldest dating back thousands of years, record the fauna that inhabited the region. The images show that cheetahs were a part of the local environment, coexisting with the pastoral peoples of the Bronze Age and the Sako-Scythian nomads of the Iron Age.
The cheetah's presence in the region persisted until the medieval period. The final decline of the Asiatic cheetah in Central Asia began in the early 20th century. A combination of factors, including uncontrolled hunting of both cheetahs and their prey, severe winters, and the conversion of their grassland habitats into agricultural areas, led to their disappearance. The last confirmed sightings in the broader Central Asian region occurred in the mid-to-late 20th century, ending a lineage that had thrived for millennia.
