A Remnant of Gondwana
Ethagala, or Elephant Rock, is a 325-meter-high inselberg, an isolated mountain of rock that rises abruptly from a flat plain. It belongs to the Wanni Complex, a major division of Sri Lanka's geology. Over 90% of the island's surface is Precambrian rock, and the formations in this region represent some of the oldest crust, with protolith (original rock) crystallization ages dating back to the Neoproterozoic era, between 690 and 1011 million years ago. These rocks were part of the supercontinent Gondwana before its fragmentation around 200 million years ago.
The rock itself is a charnockitic gneiss. Charnockites are hard, quartz-feldspar rocks containing orthopyroxene, formed under the high-temperature and high-pressure conditions of the granulite facies of metamorphism. This intense metamorphic event, part of the Pan-African orogeny that assembled Gondwana, occurred between 550 and 630 million years ago. The interlocking crystalline structure of minerals like quartz, feldspar, and pyroxene makes charnockitic gneiss exceptionally resistant to weathering. This durability is important to the rock's existence. Over hundreds of millions of years, the softer surrounding metamorphic rocks eroded away, leaving the hard charnockite core as a prominent inselberg. The elephantine shape is a product of spheroidal weathering and exfoliation, where the rock peels away in layers along natural joints and fractures.
The View from the Proterozoic
The summit of Ethagala offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, which is dotted with seven other major rock outcrops. This cluster of inselbergs shows the underlying geology of the region, where hard, resistant rock masses protrude from the otherwise flat terrain of the coconut-growing heartland. Each of these rocks shows the deep-time processes that shaped the island's crust.
The Wanni Complex, where Kurunegala is situated, consists largely of orthogneisses—metamorphic rocks derived from igneous precursors like granite and granodiorite. This contrasts with the adjacent Highland Complex, which is dominated by metasedimentary rocks like quartzite and marble. The boundary between these geological terranes shows ancient continental collisions. Atop Ethagala sits a large, 88-foot-tall white Buddha statue, a 20th-century addition to this ancient geological monument. The hike or drive to the summit allows for close inspection of the gneiss, its coarse-grained texture and mineral bands visible in the rock cuts along the path.
