An experiment with no experimenter
The dozens of tiny islets scattered across Sri Lanka's Koggala Lake are scenic features in a tranquil lagoon. They are isolated, self-contained ecosystems, each one a natural experiment in ecology. These islands are a demonstration of the theory of island biogeography, a concept formalized by ecologists Robert MacArthur and Edward O. Wilson in the 1960s. The theory predicts that the number of species an island can support is a direct function of its size and its distance from a mainland source of colonists.
On the Koggala islets, this principle is visible in the arachnid populations. Larger islands with more complex vegetation host a greater number and diversity of spiders than smaller, sparser islets. The lake itself is a barrier, limiting easy migration between these miniature worlds. Spiders, however, are excellent dispersers, often traveling through the air on silk threads in a behavior known as "ballooning." This allows them to colonize even remote islands. Once there, they face the fundamental challenge that shapes life on a small patch of land: limited resources.
Life on the edge
The dominant spiders on these islets are likely members of the family Tetragnathidae, commonly known as long-jawed orb-weavers or "stretch spiders". These spiders are characterized by their elongated bodies and powerful chelicerae (jaws). They thrive in vegetation near water, constructing horizontal orb webs to catch the flying insects that emerge from the lake. Their entire existence is tied to the productivity of their small island home.
The size of an islet dictates the amount of vegetation it can support, which in turn determines the size of the local insect population. This finite food supply places a hard ceiling on the number of spiders that can survive. On smaller islands, the competition for food is intense. Every captured fly is a victory in a zero-sum game of survival. This intense resource pressure dictates population density, influences spider behavior, and ultimately decides which species, and how many individuals, can persist in such a constrained environment. The islets of Koggala Lake are a direct, observable examples of these fundamental ecological pressures at work.
