An engineered sacred space
The Weherahena Temple, officially Weherahena Poorwarama Rajamaha Viharaya, is a product of 20th-century engineering and devotion. Construction began in 1939, initiated by the Venerable Paravahera Revata Thero on what was then a half-acre of dense jungle. The project's primary technical achievement is an artificial tunnel complex excavated directly into a large hill. This subterranean network, claimed to be the first and largest of its kind in the world, was designed to replicate the atmosphere of ancient rock-cut cave temples using modern construction methods.
The main tunnel extends for approximately 600 feet (about 183 meters). Its walls are not natural stone but are finished with plaster, which is a surface for extensive and murals. This construction choice created a controlled, stable environment for the artwork, protecting the pigments from the direct impact of weather. The complex is crowned by a colossal seated Buddha statue measuring 39 meters (128 feet) in height, constructed and completed by 1976. The entire temple complex covers about three acres.
A narrative in pigment
The tunnels function as a narrative gallery, with the plastered walls covered in sequential paintings. These murals depict the Jataka tales—stories of the Buddha's previous lives—and scenes from his final life as Siddhartha Gautama. The artistic style is a 20th-century version of traditional Sri Lankan temple art, using bright colors and clear, comic-like storytelling panels that guide visitors through the passages.
Hundreds of individual stories are rendered on the tunnel walls. The Jataka tales themselves are a collection of over 500 stories that form a significant part of Theravada Buddhist literature. The choice to illustrate these specific narratives provides a moral and philosophical progression for those walking through the underground space. The selection and arrangement of these stories within the engineered environment create a deliberate, curated experience, unlike naturally formed caves where artists adapted to irregular rock surfaces. The entire structure—from the excavated tunnels to the specific pigments on the walls—represents a modern material science approach to creating a traditional spiritual space.
