The Physics of a Monopoly
Kanazawa produces over 99% of Japan's gold leaf, a dominance from physics and protected by centuries of economic controls. The final product is a sheet of gold measuring just 1/10,000th of a millimeter (100 nanometers) thick. At this thickness, a single gram of gold can be hammered out to cover an area of one square meter. This extreme malleability is inherent to gold, but achieving it requires a specialized process perfected in Kanazawa.
The process begins with an alloy of pure gold with minute amounts of silver and copper, which is melted at around 1300°C. The added metals provide the durability necessary for the intense beating process. This alloy is rolled into a thin ribbon and then subjected to repeated machine hammering. The secret to the technique lies not in hitting the gold directly, but in sandwiching it between sheets of special handmade Japanese paper called haku-uchi-gami. This paper, itself a product of a months-long process involving ganpi plant fibers, persimmon tannin, and lye from straw ash, has unique properties that allow the gold to spread evenly without tearing. Humid climate and soft water of Kanazawa are particularly suited for producing this paper, providing an environmental component to the city's economic advantage.
Recent scientific analysis using electron microscopy has revealed that the traditional entsuke hammering technique physically alters the gold's crystalline structure. The process activates non-octahedral slip systems, a deformation mechanism rarely seen in gold at room temperature, which creates a highly ordered {001} cube texture. This unique crystal alignment is responsible for the gold leaf's characteristic brilliant shine and durability.
Centuries of Economic Control
The origins of Kanazawa's gold leaf industry began in 1593, when the powerful Maeda Toshiie, lord of the Kaga Domain, ordered its production. During the Edo period (1603–1867), the Tokugawa shogunate centralized control, establishing a guild in Edo (now Tokyo) and prohibiting gold leaf production elsewhere. Kanazawa's artisans continued their craft in secret, often under the guise of repairing sheets from Edo.
When the shogunate's restrictions officially ended with the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the Edo guild quickly declined. Kanazawa's craftsmen, who had preserved and refined their techniques, were positioned to dominate the market. They formed a trade union to control quality and output, and gold leaf became Kanazawa's second-largest industry. The introduction of mechanized hammers in the 1910s further increased productivity.
The craft's transmission was tightly controlled through long apprenticeships. Artisans spent years mastering specific stages of the process, from creating the gold alloy (zumiya) to the final beating (hakuya). This division of labor and the secrecy surrounding the production of the critical haku-uchi-gami paper created high barriers to entry, solidifying the city's monopoly. Even today, the traditional entsuke method is practiced by only a small number of artisans. The total production value of gold, silver, and platinum leaf peaked in 1990 at an estimated ¥13.6 billion, but has since declined to around ¥1.5 billion. Despite this, the craft continues, with its traditional techniques recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
