The paradoxical hunter
In the hills near Katsuyama, Japan, lies a rock layer that produces more dinosaur fossils than any other site in the country. This is the Kitadani Formation, a 100-meter-thick sequence of sandstone, shale, and tuff deposited during the Early Cretaceous Period, between 127 and 115 million years ago. At that time, this area was a floodplain crossed by meandering rivers. The layers of sediment buried the remains of a diverse ecosystem, preserving a detailed record of prehistoric life.
The most significant find from this quarry is a theropod that challenged existing dinosaur family trees. Discovered in August 2007, Fukuivenator paradoxus is named, which means "paradoxical hunter from Fukui". The single known specimen is the most complete non-avian dinosaur skeleton ever found in Japan, consisting of about 160 bones. Fukuivenator was small, about 2.45 meters long and weighing around 25 kilograms. What makes it "paradoxical" is its strange mix of traits from different coelurosaurian groups. It possesses some features similar to dromaeosaurids ("raptors"), yet shares others with primitive therizinosaurs and ornithomimosaurs. This mix of features complicates its classification, suggesting the evolutionary paths of these theropods were more complex than previously understood.
A Cretaceous ecosystem
The fossil that rewrote the books, Fukuivenator paradoxus, was not an apex predator. An analysis of its anatomy, including its long neck and heterodont teeth—different types of teeth within its jaw—suggests it was an omnivore. Its front teeth were spatulate, while its cheek teeth were pointed and unserrated, a combination suited for a diet of both plants and small animals.
The Kitadani Formation reveals the community Fukuivenator lived in. Several other dinosaur species have been identified from fossils excavated here. These include Fukuiraptor kitadaniensis, a medium-sized megaraptoran carnivore; Fukuisaurus tetoriensis, an ornithopod herbivore related to Iguanodon; and Fukuititan nipponensis, a large titanosauriform sauropod. The presence of multiple large herbivores like Fukuisaurus and a more derived hadrosauroid, Koshisaurus katsuyama, indicates the environment was lush and could support a diverse population of dinosaurs. The quarry also contains fossils of crocodiles, turtles, fish, and various plants, showing this ancient Japanese ecosystem.
