A Foundation of Fire
The rolling hills and deep canyons of southeastern Sicily rest on an immense foundation of ancient volcanic rock known as the Iblean Plateau. This is not shaped by a single, conical volcano, but by a series of massive flood basalt eruptions that occurred intermittently over millions of years, from the Late Triassic to the early Pleistocene. The most intense period of this activity took place during the Miocene epoch. Tectonic forces, driven by the slow-motion collision of the African and Eurasian plates, created deep fissures in the Earth's crust. Through these fissures, enormous quantities of highly fluid basaltic lava poured out, not in explosive eruptions, but in vast, sheet-like flows.
Much of this volcanic activity happened underwater. At the time, the Iblean Plateau was a submarine carbonate platform, and the eruptions occurred on the seafloor. This submarine environment led to the formation of distinctive "pillow lavas," rounded structures that form when lava cools rapidly upon contact with water. In addition to pillow lavas, extensive fields of hyaloclastites—fragmented glassy basalt created by the explosive interaction of hot lava and water—are common throughout the plateau. Subsequent tectonic uplift has raised these ancient submarine lava fields high above the current sea level, with the highest point, Monte Lauro, reaching an elevation of 987 meters (3,238 feet).
The chemistry of the Iblean basalts shows a complex history. Geochemical analysis shows the lava ranges from tholeiitic to alkaline, indicating that the magma originated from different depths and conditions within the Earth's mantle. This variation is linked to changes in the tectonic regime over millions of years. For example, a particularly voluminous and brief eruption of tholeiitic basalt occurred in the late Pliocene. The total volume of volcanic rock is difficult to pinpoint precisely, but estimates for the Miocene-to-Quaternary activity alone are around 30-40 cubic kilometers, covering an area of about 250 square kilometers.
Canyons Carved in Volcanic Rock
The modern landscape of the Iblean Plateau has deep, dramatic canyons, evidence of the erosive power of water acting on the volcanic and limestone bedrock. Rivers like the Anapo and the Cassibile have, over millennia, carved spectacular gorges into the plateau. The most famous of these is the Cava Grande del Cassibile, a canyon over 10 kilometers long and up to 500 meters deep.
The walls of these canyons expose the geological layers of the plateau, showing the interaction between periods of volcanic activity and marine sedimentation. Layers of dark basalt are interspersed with the white and golden limestone that formed on the seafloor during periods of volcanic quiet. This creates a visual contrast and records the region's geological history.
This unique geology supports high biodiversity. The canyons create distinct microclimates, where lush vegetation thrives along the riverbeds, including Oriental planes, poplars, and willows. The steep, rocky walls provide habitats for rare plants like the Sicilian orchid (Ophrys lunulata) and animals such as the Mediterranean peregrine falcon and the European pine marten. Freshwater crabs and the native Macrostigma trout can be found in the clear waters of the rivers. The terrain is a direct result of its volcanic past, with the durable basalt layers forming the resistant caprock of the plateaus while the rivers exploit faults and softer sedimentary layers to carve their deep paths.
