A living biological puzzle
The island of Halmahera sits in a unique biological transition zone known as Wallacea. This cluster of Indonesian islands is caught between Asia and Australia, and its fauna reflects this. The islands of Wallacea were never connected by land bridges to either continent. This isolation is thanks to a deep-sea trench that forms the Wallace Line, a faunal boundary first identified by naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace in 1859. To the west of the line, animals are overwhelmingly of Asian origin; to the east, they are of Australian origin.
Halmahera lies to the east of the main line, yet it contains a mix of species from both regions. This biological paradox makes the island a living laboratory of evolution. Here, Australasian marsupials like the ornate cuscus (Phalanger ornatus) share the forest with animals whose relatives are found in Asia. The island hosts over 220 bird species and 38 mammal species, many of which are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth.
Wallace's island of discovery
Alfred Russel Wallace spent eight years, from 1854 to 1862, traveling the Malay Archipelago, collecting over 125,000 specimens. His time on and around Halmahera was exceptionally productive. While suffering from a malarial fever in a hut on the island in February 1858, he independently conceived of the theory of evolution by natural selection. He promptly wrote his ideas in an essay and mailed it to Charles Darwin from the neighboring island of Ternate.
Wallace's observations on Halmahera provided direct evidence for his theory. He documented the strange mix of fauna, a clear indicator that different species colonize and adapt based on their ability to cross natural barriers. One of his most notable finds was the standardwing bird-of-paradise (Semioptera wallacii), whose males perform spectacular aerial courtship displays. He also discovered the world's largest bee, Megachile pluto, a massive insect with jaws like a stag beetle. This bee was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1981. These discoveries on Halmahera were additions to a collection and pieces of a puzzle that changed our understanding of life on Earth.
