An ape's face on a lemur's body
In 1899, paleontologist Ludwig Lorenz von Liburnau received a strange jawbone from Andrahomana Cave in southeastern Madagascar. He initially thought it belonged to an ape, naming it Hadropithecus, or "stout ape". It was, in fact, an extinct lemur, one of the so-called "monkey lemurs" from the family Archaeolemuridae. This terrestrial primate weighed an estimated 27 to 35 kilograms (60 to 77 pounds), about the size of a large male baboon.
The skull of Hadropithecus stenognathus is a remarkable case of convergent evolution with early hominins. Its face was short and flat, its jaw was deep and powerful, and it sported a bony crest on its skull for large chewing muscle attachments, similar to a gorilla's. Its brain was also surprisingly large for a prosimian, with a cranial capacity measured at 115 ml. Unlike its sister taxon Archaeolemur, which had a longer snout, Hadropithecus developed a facial structure strikingly similar to robust australopithecines like Paranthropus boisei. This independent evolution of similar traits in unrelated species happened because they occupied similar ecological niches. Both were ground-dwelling primates with diets that required powerful chewing.
A hard diet and a recent extinction
The skull and dental anatomy of Hadropithecus point to a highly specialized diet. Its massive molars and powerful jaw seem perfectly suited for eating hard objects like seeds or nuts. Analysis of microscopic wear patterns on its teeth reveals heavy pitting and scratching, which supports this idea. Other evidence complicates this picture. The lemur's dental enamel was not especially thick, a feature usually seen in animals that regularly crack hard nuts. Isotope analysis of its bones suggests a diet that included tough, fibrous items like tubers or grasses. This "Hadropithecus conundrum" shows that it likely processed large quantities of tough, low-quality food, whether it was hard seeds or fibrous tubers.
Hadropithecus was likely a rare animal even before its extinction. The last known fossil evidence is radiocarbon dated to between 444 and 772 CE. Its disappearance occurred relatively soon after the arrival of humans on Madagascar. As a large, ground-dwelling animal with a specialized diet, it would have been highly vulnerable to pressure from human activities. The introduction of livestock and pigs, along with habitat destruction, likely drove this unique primate to extinction.
