The Chocolate Tree's Nemesis
In the cacao groves of Ecuador's Napo Province, a constant battle is waged against two fungal pathogens that threaten the world's chocolate supply. These are Moniliophthora perniciosa, the cause of witches' broom disease, and Moniliophthora roreri, which causes frosty pod rot. Both are basidiomycete fungi, and they are responsible for massive crop losses, sometimes destroying 80-90% of a harvest. The first verified report of frosty pod rot came from Ecuador in 1895, while witches' broom arrived in the country by 1918, crippling the nation's cacao industry.
Witches' broom disease is named for the dense, chaotic clusters of shoots that grow from infected parts of the Theobroma cacao tree. The fungus manipulates the tree's hormonal balance, causing it to divert energy into these useless "brooms" instead of producing healthy cacao pods. Frosty pod rot is more direct; it attacks the cacao pods themselves. An infected pod will develop dark, necrotic lesions and eventually be covered in a pale, frosty layer containing billions of spores ready to be spread by wind or rain.
A History of Devastation and Resistance
The arrival of these diseases in the early 20th century was catastrophic for Ecuador, which was then a top global producer of high-quality cacao. Between 1916 and 1932, the country's cacao production fell by 77%. The prized native cacao variety, 'Nacional', known for its complex floral aroma, was susceptible to witches' broom and was nearly wiped out. This agricultural crisis prompted a shift in the industry. Farmers began to abandon the delicate Nacional trees in favor of more robust, disease-resistant hybrids.
In the 1960s, an Ecuadorian plant scientist named Homero Castro developed a hybrid called Colección Castro Naranjal 51, or CCN-51. This variety is resistant to both witches' broom and frosty pod rot and can produce higher yields than traditional varieties. While CCN-51 helped save the country's cacao industry from complete collapse, its flavor is considered inferior to Nacional. Today, much of Ecuador's production is CCN-51, but dedicated efforts are underway to preserve the few remaining stands of "Ancient Nacional" trees, some of which are over 100 years old and have survived the fungal onslaughts.
