A bastion for biodiversity
The Charles Darwin Research Station, located in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, is the operational arm of the Charles Darwin Foundation, founded in 1959. The station itself was formally inaugurated in 1964 and is a hub for scientists from around the world. Its primary mission is to conduct scientific research to inform the conservation efforts managed by the Galápagos National Park Directorate. More than 100 scientists, educators, and volunteers work on projects across the archipelago's terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
The station's most visible and famous work is the Giant Tortoise Restoration Initiative. This captive breeding and rearing program began in the 1960s to save several tortoise species from vanishing forever. One of its most famous residents was Lonesome George, the last surviving Pinta Island tortoise (Chelonoidis abingdonii). Discovered on Pinta in 1971, he was brought to the station in 1972 and lived there until his death from natural causes on June 24, 2012, marking the final extinction of his species. His preserved remains are now on display at the station to show the stakes of conservation.
Rebuilding giant populations
The story of the Española Island tortoise (Chelonoidis hoodensis) shows the station's remarkable success. In the 1970s, the species was reduced to just 15 individuals: 12 females and 3 males. These last survivors were brought into the captive breeding program. Over more than four decades, the program successfully hatched and reared thousands of offspring. To date, more than 2,000 young tortoises have been repatriated to Española, establishing a breeding, self-sustaining population that now numbers around 2,300. A significant contributor was a male named Diego, who returned from the San Diego Zoo in 1976 and is credited with fathering at least 800 of the offspring.
The process is meticulous. Eggs are collected and kept in incubators where temperature is controlled—an important factor, as warmer temperatures produce more females. This technique helps accelerate population recovery. Hatchlings are raised at the center for four to five years, until their shells are large enough to protect them from predators like the Galápagos hawk, before being returned to their native islands. This program has successfully repatriated over 8,000 tortoises to six different islands. The station's research extends to marine life, including sharks and sea turtles, and terrestrial ecosystems, where scientists study everything from Darwin's finches to the control of invasive species like the parasitic fly Philornis downsi.
