The Ultimate Angler
In the bright coral and rubble of the Coral Triangle, a master of deception waits. The frogfish, a member of the family Antennariidae, is an ambush predator perfected by evolution. Its body is lumpy and asymmetrical, often covered in fleshy spinules and appendages that allow it to blend in perfectly with surrounding sponges, corals, or algae-covered rocks. Some individuals are so well camouflaged that other marine animals, like sea slugs, have crawled directly over them without notice. This ability to vanish is not static; a frogfish can change its color and even skin texture over several weeks to match a new environment.
The centerpiece of its hunting strategy is a modified first dorsal spine, called the illicium, which functions exactly like a fishing rod. At the tip of this rod is a fleshy bait, the esca, which is an example of aggressive mimicry. Different species have evolved lures of astounding variety. The Striated Frogfish (Antennarius striatus) dangles an esca with 2 to 7 worm-like appendages, wiggling it to entice prey. Other species have lures that resemble small shrimp or fish. The frogfish remains perfectly still, twitching only its lure until a curious victim moves into range.
A High-Speed Vacuum
The final act of the hunt is one of the fastest predatory events in the animal kingdom. When prey is within striking distance, the frogfish's mouth expands to 12 times its normal volume. This explosive expansion creates an inescapable vacuum, sucking in the prey and surrounding water in as little as six milliseconds. The entire event, from opening the jaws to closing them, is so rapid that other fish in a passing school may not even notice one of their own has vanished. Water is expelled through the gills while a special muscle closes the esophagus, preventing any chance of escape.
This incredible speed is generated by the release of energy stored in elastic ligaments around the jaw. The mechanism is an example of biological engineering, allowing the frogfish to swallow prey whole, sometimes consuming animals larger than itself thanks to a highly distensible stomach. They lack a swim bladder, which keeps them on the seafloor where they often move by "walking" on their modified pectoral and pelvic fins. When a burst of speed is needed, they can use jet propulsion, gulping water and forcing it out through their gill openings to move forward. The waters of the Maluku Islands, particularly in Ambon Bay, are a famous location for spotting these creatures, including the exceptionally rare Psychedelic Frogfish (Histiophryne psychedelica).
