Europe's gateway to space
In the German city of Darmstadt, the European Space Agency (ESA) operates its nerve center for robotic space missions. The European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) was inaugurated on September 8, 1967, and has since managed the flight of more than 90 spacecraft. Its first mission, ESRO-2B, was launched and controlled from the facility in May 1968. Today, ESOC's teams operate around two dozen satellites at any given time, 24 hours a day.
The facility's primary function is the mission control center for uncrewed ESA spacecraft. This involves the important launch and early orbit phase (LEOP), where a satellite is brought under control after separating from its rocket, as well as routine operations for the mission's entire lifespan. The work happens in specialized control rooms, including the Main Control Room, where engineers monitor and command spacecraft studying Earth, the Sun, and distant planets. The staff at ESOC includes approximately 250 permanent ESA employees and around 550 contractors.
Landmark missions and global reach
ESOC has a history of managing complex, high-profile missions. One of its successes was Rosetta, which culminated in 2014 with the first-ever landing of a probe, Philae, on a comet, 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. Another mission is Mars Express, which has been orbiting Mars since 2003, providing detailed 3D maps of the planet's surface. The center also directs Gaia, a space observatory launched in 2013 that is creating a precise three-dimensional map of over a billion stars in our galaxy.
To communicate with these spacecraft, ESOC manages the European Space Tracking (ESTRACK) network, a global system of ground stations. The core network includes seven stations in locations like Kourou (French Guiana), Malargüe (Argentina), and New Norcia (Australia). Three of these stations feature massive 35-meter antennas for communicating with deep-space missions.
Beyond mission control, ESOC hosts ESA's Space Debris Office. This office tracks the ever-growing cloud of orbital debris, estimates the risk of collisions, and coordinates avoidance maneuvers. On average, each ESA satellite in Earth orbit performs two such maneuvers per year to dodge space junk. The office catalogues an estimated 130 million debris objects larger than 1 millimeter.
